It began as an ordinary afternoon at a murky local pond. A fisherman. A rod. A quiet bank. Conditions, by every account, ideal — right up until the water broke and two ancient eyes rose out of the silt like a periscope that predates the invention of the fishing license.

The animal, since identified by locals only as Mossy, did not submerge. He did not drift. Witnesses state, with photographic support, that the snapping turtle advanced — slowly, deliberately, the way something advances when it holds an estimated forty years of pond seniority and answers to no known predator.

"He kept coming," the witness reported. "I moved down the bank. He adjusted course. I moved again. He adjusted again." The witness, an experienced angler familiar with Lake Michigan waters, described the pursuit as "unhurried" and "personal."

It was at this point in the encounter that the situation, in the witness's words, "stopped being funny." A second shape — visibly larger — was observed moving beneath the surface several yards behind the first. It did not surface. It did not need to.
